Credit Cards that Draw Young Consumers with Bling

Of course, as adults, most of us give little thought to how our credit cards actually look. Whether there are shades of purple and red or images of our favorite rock stars is of little significance, especially when it’s time to write that monthly check. We want to know we’re getting the best interest rates, the benefits that count and perks that keep us coming back for more.

Ah… but then there are the teens and young adults in our lives whose priorities might be a bit different. The credit card companies know it’s the “bling” that draws these fashion-conscious young minds. If you’re helping your teens or college students as they begin their financial histories, you’ve surely explained it’s less about the look and more about the logistics of a credit card. Still, there’s no harm in looking good as you navigate those logistics. With that in mind, here are a few of the more “shinier” credit card offers designed for those young and hip folks who have something to say via their choices in credit cards.

Prepaid Visa Pink Diamond

This latest offering from the RushCard family of prepaid cards makes use of our love affair with diamonds. It looks great, but how does it rank in the world of prepaid credit cards? Here’s our take.

The free direct deposit feature suggests there are money saving features built into this Visa. Delving a bit further into the offer, we learn card holders will receive a free prescription discount card, free online bill pay and free text alerts. These conveniences are great and the fees that are generated when using this card is comparable to others, an in fact, some rank even better.

For instance, many card companies now charge inactive fees. You don’t have to worry about that with the Prepaid Visa Pink Diamond RushCard. Adding money is free, your online statements are free (you can request a monthly paper statement for an additional $1 per month) and the activation fee is just $3. The best part of this offer is knowing you have the power of the Visa logo behind you, including the Visa Zero Liability protection.

Discover Student Card

This is a fine choice for parents who really want their teens or college students to understand how APR works, cash back features and of course, variable interest rates. Unlike the other cars in this review, this is a traditional credit card (versus a prepaid card or secured card) which means it’s also a great way to introduce kids to the dynamics of a traditional card. There are no annual fees, no rewards redemption fees and several ways to earn cash back. Of course, you know it looks good if it makes it in this review. Your teens can have their own unique look via the monogram offered by Discover.

Upside Visa Card

The draw of the Upside Visa prepaid card is that it’s advertised as having “the power of a bank account”. It bypasses some of the more expensive fees you typically find with prepaid offers, though you are charged 0.99 cents each month you load less than $500 a month. If you don’t typically put $500 onto the card, the monthly fee is still low, at $2.99. Free direct deposit and 50,000 “on site” places to load cash make it a convenient offer. Here’s where it really begins to stray from the prepaid dynamic. You can write personal checks online, which makes it a great alternative to the classic checking account. Finally, because this is a rewards card, you can earn cash back rewards points with every purchase. The vivid color scheme makes it a fine choice for those drawn to eye credit candy.

The focus, of course, should be on the lessons young people will learn with their first credit cards. That said, if it’s a handsome design that pulls their interest, then it’s worthwhile. Ensuring they get the message and lessons are what truly matter. Stressing the importance of reading the terms and conditions, the crucial need for on time payments and learning a bit of self discipline is what it’s all about. After all, they’ll have a lifetime of credit cards (provided they maintain their credit histories) that they can bling-out all they want.
